Q: I prepared a PDF file on my PC recently and sent it to the printers for them to run-off a flyer but they said that the file was not of high resolution. What am I doing wrong?
A: Modern PCs make it easy to prepare PDF files but usually in low resolution. This is fine for proofing purposes but to allow the printers to run-off the job to print quality requires high-resolution graphics to be supplied to a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) density in
high resolution.
That’s fine for jobs such as flyers but for the fineness of detail required for reproducing signatures for example, or sketches in black and white, line scans at 800dpi resolution are needed.
A good tip about supplying PDFs. Make sure you save them with the trim and bleed marks clearly shown. These will show clearly the exact dimensions needed, otherwise the printer may not be able to print the job exactly to your requirements and you may end up with a white
border that will spoil the finished product.
We always say to customers: if in doubt, talk to us first to minimise the time (and therefore charges) needed to convert material to the correct print-ready specification.
